首先，在语音层上，布龙菲尔德先生首先给语音学和音系学下了定义。语音学是关于语音的发出、传递与接受的科学，也就是现代语音学的发音语音学、声学语音学和听觉语音学。音系学是具有限制、能区别意义的语音的科学，也就是关于音位的科学。事实上，语音学又可以分为生理音位学、物理音位学，此外还有实用语音学。音位是区别语言特征的最小单位，其主要的类型有噪音、乐音等。布龙菲尔德以英语为例，对各种类型都进行了详细的分析。随后对音延、音长、重音、音高等概念作了分析，并且根据发音方式研究各种变异，把语音的结构分为主音位和次音位两类。布龙菲尔德还使用了“替换法”研究音位学，这也是创举性的做法。
其次，在语义层面，布龙菲尔德在其研究中提出了对语言意义研究的看法。他认为，意义是“说话人发出语言形式时所处的情境和这个形式在听话人那儿的所引起的反应”，“语言学的描写工作在于对语言形式作出比较严格的分析，同时假定这些语言形式具有固定的和可以确定的意义。”与语言的形式相比，布龙菲尔德认为意义的研究有其复杂性和不确定性，是难以界说的，所以语言研究应该立足于形式。布龙菲尔德对于主观性的“意义”提出质疑，这是可以理解的，但他并未在其理论中否定意义的重要性，“言语——话语，无论它本身多么微不足道，只要它有一个意义，它就是重要的，因为意义包含着言语——话语所联系的重要东西，即实际活动。”他也认为，完全否认语义研究的人“是根本不存在的”。事实证明，布龙菲尔德在他的《语言论》中是中国没有抛开对于
意义的研究，相反还多次提到“语言研究必须包括意义的考虑和运用”。
最后，在语法方面，他从语法的角度提出了研究语言的方法，从句型上，布龙菲尔德通过语调变化特征和选择特征来区分不同的句子类型。他把语言分为两大句子类型，完整句和小型句，并作具体分析；从句法上，他依照传统的方式，把语法分为句法和词法两部分，先讲句法，他认为短语和句子都属句法部分，“一个语言的自由形式（词和短语）在较大的自由形式（短语）里出现，是按变调、变音、选择和语序这些语法单位来安排的。任何有意义的、重复出现的这些成套的语法单位就是句法结构。”可见布龙菲尔德基本上还是从语音的角度分析语法的。他在分析短语时，提出了两个重要的.概念，向心结构和离心结构，并且运用向心结构和离心结构的方法，把合成短语分成具体的类别，他认为两个或两个以上的自由形式结合成一个短语称为合成短语。关于语法形式的配对方式，布龙菲尔德也把它分成了四种，即词序、变调、变音、形式的选择。
