也就在80岁这一年，他的孙子迷上了电脑画图。孙子电脑画图，他在院子里击剑，本是井水不犯河水。哪知道，他击剑或划拳时，有一个老习惯，就是喜欢“嗨嗨嗨”地大吼。这一吼搁在平时不打紧，可在孙子作画时喊出，无形中干扰了他的思维，中断了他的灵感。孙子没好气地嚷着：“没看见我在作画吗？”
“作画？”他惊讶地睁大了眼睛，“我没看见你拿画纸画笔呀！也不见什么颜料，拿什么作画？”
“电脑作画！”面对电脑一窍不通的爷爷，恼火的孙子很无奈地摇了摇头。
只听说过电脑打游戏，没听说电脑还能作画。一时间，他来了兴趣，来到孙子的电脑前。孙子一点击鼠标，画面上立即出现了一大块“喷漆”似的图景，煞是好看。他被迷住了，缠着要孙子教他电脑作画的技法。
孙子点开工具栏上的图标说：“这有什么难的`？要橡皮，图标里不是有一个橡皮的图案吗？要刷子，就用鼠标点一下刷子……就这么简单！”
他像小学生似的听着，还缠着要孙子教他开机，教他鼠标的操作。对于电脑作画，他真的很痴迷，像是找到了人生中的“乐子”。
孙子上学后，他坐在了电脑前，鼓捣着孙子所传授的技法——在工具栏中找绘图工具，再选择刷子或是画笔……开始的时候，他就从这些简单的基本功练起，一来熟悉工具栏的应用，二来练习鼠标的操作。
他和孙子用的是Windows95软件“画图”工具作画。95的“画图”软件是一个功能强大的位图绘制程序，提供了一套绘图工具和范围比较宽的色彩，有比较多的备选图形。这么多图案和制图工具，如果没有恒心，一般的人也会弄得头晕眼花。
可他是个今天睡下去了，明天没准不会醒来的80岁老人。他的人生已是到了按天计算的时候了，他却笑哈哈地说：“不能看到明天，就把今天的事情做好！既然喜欢上了电脑作画，就要努力把它做好，至少没辜负我这辈子最钟情的事！”
就连最简单的开机和鼠标操作，他足足练了5天。为了熟练地运用软件中的各种绘图工具，有时候还和孙子抢电脑。让孙子感动并主动提出让位的，是他82岁时画的一幅主题为《雪》的电脑画。画面上各种景物被漫天飞雪覆盖着，野外的一所房子孤寂地躺在雪海之中，窗棂里却透出暖暖的亮光……
继《雪》后，他又一连推出了《风》《鱼》《树》等系列电脑画。他的画作由开始的自我欣赏，已发展成了有专门网页出售。网上购买十分火爆，一天的点击数就高达1万多。现已98岁高龄的他每天说得最多的一句话是：“今天我想多画一幅什么样的画？”
《华尔街日报》以《80岁学画，98岁成艺术家》为标题，对他的电脑画作进行了大版面的宣传。文章的结尾这样写道：对于一个追求成功的人来说，80岁起步也不晚！因为对于成功者来说，只有终点，没有起点！
