十八世纪末时，天花是世界上最恐怖的传染病，在英国每年有四万多人于天花；在俄国平均每七个小孩，有一个小孩会因天花而，面对这致命的传染病，全球各地却是束手无策，惶恐以待。爱德华？金纳出生于英国告罗士打郡伯克利牧区，是一名在乡村行医的英国医生。当时流传一个人只要曾经染上牛痘，便不会染上天花。金纳由此意会到牛痘与天花有关，并进一步进行实验。他在一名男孩手臂上划了几道伤口，然后接种牛痘。男孩在染上牛痘的6星期后康复，金纳再替他接种天花，结果男孩完全没有被感染，证明牛痘能使人对天花免疫。
金纳将此称之为“预防接种”，得到“免疫学之父”的名头，并替后人打开研究的通道，使巴斯德、科赫等人对其它疾病展开研发治疗及免疫的方法，此后，巴斯德等人发明各种疫苗，我们才有安定的今天。在发明疫苗前，人心惶惶，大家怕惨于病魔之下。发明疫苗后，人们不再成天担心，虽然目前只有天花成功的在世界上绝迹，但我们更了解这些可怕的病菌了，也懂得如何去预防它。“天下没有不可能的事”，从前，意大利人视天花为外星球来的瘟疫，在爱得华？金纳医生发明疫苗后，使像“天花”这种令人生畏的传染病也能从此消失。
如今我们享受医学研究成果带来的便利、舒适，感冒了，吃个药，很快就好了，甚至打个预防针，就不怕流行性感冒的'肆虐，若不是有这些前人伟大的发明，我们焉有今日的太平盛世？公元1871年的普法之战，约三万五千人于天花，比在枪炮下的人还多，可见天花在当时的恐怖！然而，藉由爱德华？金纳发明的疫苗，人能却能逐步走出天花的阴霾。
一阵笑声传来，将我的思绪拉回现实。窗外是一个安宁的世界，而我的内心深处，由衷的感谢金纳医生。若不是他的发明，地球上的人类，无法如此安逸的生活。
