有个人总爱攒钱，他一心只想着集攒各国的金银钱币，以致发展到近似疯狂的程度。按理说这些钱闲置着不产生利润，集攒起来毫无效益可言，但为了确保其财宝的安全，这个吝啬鬼搬到了一个岛屿上，让环绕岛屿的大海来阻挡各类盗匪的袭扰。对一般人来说这毫无乐趣可言，但攒钱人却乐此不彼，他反复清点、盘算、抚摸这些钱币，不分白天与黑夜，把这当成了自己人生的一大重要乐趣。
他发现自己的帐目总是有出入，原先是他养的一只猴子粗中有细，常常趁主人不注意，把杜卡金币等从窗口往海里扔下去。就这样使他帐目总是不符，还闹不清到底是啥原因。
金库房间上了大锁，钱就堆在帐簿台上。这一天，调皮的猴子想用这些钱对大海作一次无私的奉献。猴子的欢乐和吝啬鬼的斤斤计较真具戏剧色彩，相信猴子的举动能得到一些人的理解，但要说孰对孰错，恐怕也得分析大半天才行。这只专司捣蛋的猴溜进了库房，从大堆的钱财中随意翻捡着各国的金币。为了证明自己的力气和投掷技巧，它将攒钱人视为生命的贵金属币扔出了窗外。要不是听到那位爱攒钱的人把钥匙插进锁孔开门准备算账，我们这只爱捣乱的猴还不明白会扔出去多少杜卡金币。也许它会使所有的金币全都飞向大海，坠入那屡屡发生沉船的海底深渊，使库房里荡然无存。
上帝想使许多理财能手免遭同样的噩运，而这种人却始终没有把自己攒的钱用对地方。
