火烧岛在台湾岛东边的东海里，距离台东有几十里。火烧岛的由来有这样一个传说：
阿里山下住着阿里和阿里嫂夫妻俩。他们有一个儿子叫阿沟。夫妻俩对儿子宝贝得要命，真是含在嘴里怕化了，捧在手里怕掉了。天气冷了，用棉花包起像包粽子;天气热了，夫妻俩轮流替他打扇子到天亮。儿子渐渐长大了，能讲话、走路了。夫妻俩更加疼爱，“乖乖，乖乖”不离口。儿子要吃什么，要玩什么，千方百计找来给他吃，给他玩，总怕儿子嘟一嘟嘴巴。
有一天晚饭后，夫妻俩带着儿子在门外散步。月亮出来经过对面高山顶。儿子看见了，于是指着月亮说：“爸爸，我要玩月亮，你上山顶摘下来给我玩。”这下爸爸可不知如何是好了，他恳求地说：“悬崖峭壁的高山，怎么能爬上去摘月亮呢?”儿子可不听这话，他身子摇了两摇就滚在地上大哭。过去，儿子一打滚，父母就只有千方百计满足他的要求，可现在这个摘月亮的要求把他爸爸难住了。妈妈慌忙拉起儿子，替他拍掉身上的.泥，搂着儿子说：“乖乖，莫滚莫哭，爸爸上山摘月亮给你。”她转过头来恶狠狠地骂阿里：“你呀，做什么老子呀，快上山去摘月亮给阿沟玩!”
阿里无可奈何爬上山去，艰难地攀藤踩石爬呀爬呀，爬得汗流浃背，爬得手脚打颤。山下的儿子却在不断催促：“快呀快呀，快摘月亮给我玩!”阿里爬到陡峭的山崖上，脚踏上了一块松石，连人带石骨碌碌滚下山脚，脑壳开了，手脚断了，肉模糊像一堆烂南瓜。
阿里嫂抱着阿沟去看，她的心像刀绞那么痛，眼泪扑籁籁流下来。儿子阿沟也舞手踢脚地大哭起来，可他却不是在哭爸爸的，是哭爸爸没有摘月亮下来：“晤，晤，月亮，晤，爸爸不替我摘月亮，在这里躺着睡觉，晤唔唔……”妈妈也顺着儿子的心意，指着阿里骂道：“你不摘月亮下来给阿沟玩，你该!”
埋葬了阿里以后，阿里嫂照样溺爱儿子，纵容几子。儿子越来越大，胆子也越来越大。阿里嫂也年老了，被称作阿里婶了。她的儿子发展到又偷牛，又偷粮，还招集一帮坏人大搞绑架、人、放火。老百姓深受其害，于是组织起来打阿沟这帮坏蛋。
阿沟带领一队坏蛋渡海去占领了南寮岛，把岛上的老百姓统统光。还经常乘船到台东、大麻里、都兰，绑架百姓，抢掠财物，放火烧村，搞得天怒人怨。大家都来责备阿里婶：“你呀，溺爱孩子，纵容孩子，现在害得我们老百姓家破人亡，不得安生，你呀，你不觉得难过吗?你有罪啊!”后来，那队坏蛋竟然抢到了阿里婶家，抢走了她的鸡、猪和粮食，还打伤了阿里婶。这时，阿里婶才醒悟过来。
于是，她和老百姓一起向天祷告，请求玛祖婆除掉这个祸。天上飞下来一只高大的火鸡，脚根长，嘴下垂着红彤彤的皮肉，像一团火。它来到阿里婶家说：“阿里婶，玛祖婆派我下来喷火球烧南寮岛上的坏人，你同意吗?那里面可有你的儿子阿沟啊。”阿里婶恨恨地说：“阿沟不是我的儿子，烧吧，烧吧，烧光那一群坏蛋!”
火鸡站在台东海岸的石崖上，拍拍翅膀，昂头长鸣一声，张开大口，哗哗哗，吐出大团的红火焰，一串串地飞向南寮岛，火在南寮岛上劈里巴啦燃烧起来，灰烟飞腾，火焰冲天。
阿里婶和百姓一同大叫：“烧呀，烧呀，烧那一群坏蛋!”火鸡口里的火球不断地喷过去，烧呀，烧呀，南寮岛上的坏蛋通通被烧成了焦炭，连石头也烧红了。阿里婶眼泪不滴一颗，只是连声呼喊：“烧呀，烧呀，烧得好!烧得好!”
后来，人们就把南寮岛称为火烧岛，只有一个镇还称做南寮镇。

we left home quite early in order to avoid the traffic jam.about two hours later, we came to a nice place. it was near a river. we put our bicycles under the trees and went swimming. it was a very hot day. the water was very refreshing.
after having a swim, we had lunch in the cool shade under the trees. then we went for a walk. we didn't come back home until the night fell.

and jumped into the water. it was hot, but the water made us refreshed. after we swam around:'the river, we were tired.
we took out the sandwiches and water, and had our picnic in the shade under the trees. the most popular food are sausages and tomatoes.
after lunch we took a walk. there we saw many beautiful flowers and GREen grass. we smelled sweet air. how nice the picnic was!
我们骑车花了约两个小时，终于到了野外那个美丽的地方。那里有一条小河，河水清澈，真是个游泳的好地方。我们把自行车往地上一搁，就跳进河里。天气真热，河水让人感到舒爽。游了几个来回，我们有些累了。
我们拿出准备好的三明治和水，开始在树阴下野餐。最受欢迎的食品是香肠和西红柿。
