人的一生，原来可以这样浓缩定格：因岁月久远而泛黄的帮病人缴费的单据，与她少年时代几乎全优的成绩单，静静陈列在小小的玻璃柜里。此外还有一生各个阶段的证件证书，只是没有结婚证。
她是林巧稚（1901-1983），离开这个纷扰世间，已经32年。
雄秀的鼓浪屿上，游人如织。林巧稚纪念馆毓园，如一朵花儿，静美绽放在这个以钢琴、以步行、以故事等等闻名的小岛上。而我也因为那尊美好的汉白玉雕像，以及园外以翻开的书籍状呈现的金属上镌刻的一些林巧稚的生前语录，渐渐对她生出了几分好奇。身为历史学者的爱人对我说：应该思考一下，为什么从来没有人对林巧稚有微辞？
是啊，对身为名人的她，几乎查不到任何有人说她坏话的文字记录。这无论对名人还是普通人，都是“不可能实现的目标”，但林巧稚毫不费力地做到了，为什么？答案在一些零零碎碎的叙述与小事里，徐徐展开。
即便在春节假期，鼓浪屿的图书馆也是开放的，而且对我们这样随性的游人也不设门槛，不需任何证件就可以自由阅读。我在一本有关鼓浪屿历史的书里读到了一个细节，此事折射了林巧稚无私奉献的品格，即当年林巧稚与一个师范女同学一起远赴上海考点去考协和医学院，在考试进行中同伴突发急病，林巧稚毫不犹豫地搁笔救人，放弃了考试。考官感于巧稚的忘我与奉献精神，经过一番曲折，再加上林巧稚能说一口流利的英语，终为她争取到了破格入学的机会。
林巧稚一共在协和医学院学习八年，直至拿到博士学位（她当时拿的是协和医学院的毕业证书与纽约州立大学的博士学位证书，两者应该类同于如今的“联合办学”）。毕业那年，林巧稚获得了那一届协和毕业生的最高荣誉“文海奖”。这是一个外籍教会医生捐出全部财产设立的奖项，也是协和当时的最高荣誉，每届毕业生只有一人可获此殊荣。林巧稚不仅学业极为出众，且在课余热心公益，为人无私忘我，故获得了众口一词的赞誉和当届的获奖资格。
在很多事情上，金钱确实是一个试金石，可以试出一个人的价值观与品性。林巧稚及其家人的可敬，也在这方面得以体现。当时协和医学院的学费较为昂贵，学程又长，而巧稚的父亲在她读到漫长八年中的一半多的时候辞世。巧稚的兄长继承了家业，同时也继承了父亲对于巧稚的责任，继续供她上学直至拿到博士学位。巧稚在工作后，自然而然地予以回报，尽管自身的.职位和单位历经变化，甚至在协和医院一度关闭期间还曾自开诊所等等，她都毅然决然负担起了兄长的四个孩子在北京求学的所有费用。
一生未婚的林巧稚还坚持多年做了许多令人感佩的事。她从工作开始，就请人列出了鼓浪屿需要资助的亲朋名单，她按人头每月寄生活费，一直到辞世。如果说这些事情还与亲缘相关的话，她为不相识的贫穷病人付医药费的事例则难以计数。另外，她辞世时的遗嘱有三项内容，“三万元积蓄捐献给医院的托儿所。遗体供医院作医学解剖用。骨灰撒在故乡鼓浪屿的海上。”
林巧稚是一个真正美好的人，若用图景形容，恰如“海上生明月”。我其实不太相信那个“经她亲手接生的孩子超过五万个”的传扬已久的数字，但因她而得到平安与福报的人，则何止千千万。在事业上，她倾其一生只做一件事，那就是在医学上孤心苦诣、好学不倦、不断精进;在精神方面，她也只做一件事，舍一己私利去救助与帮助他人，一生通透完美如琉璃。
说句实话，林巧稚年轻时的照片，面容姣好、明眸善睐，真的很美。可以想见，当年她的追求者不会少。但她没有选择他们中的任何一个人。我想我们其实不够了解她，这个受过良好的西式教育、睡前读物几乎全为英文书籍的大夫，她将一生的使命定位为治病救人，豁出了全部的自己。
这样的人是天使，即便是内心最黑暗的人，也难以找到她的人性弱点，因此我们也几乎找不到旁人说她是非的言词记录。不过我想，至少会有一个灵魂为她难过心疼吧，为她一生奋斗不息、忘记了停歇也忘记了自身而悲伤，那就是她那因患宫颈癌而早逝的母亲。每一个母亲，内心深处都不愿儿女单方面去燃烧自己温暖世界，活成一个完美的雕塑，却没有可以小声叹一口气的小小家园。
鼓浪屿上的鲜花常年盛开，图书馆里的陌生人拈花微笑，而生于斯长于斯的林巧稚，永远不会再回来。

Spring came with ail its glories. The new grass exposed its green colour. The pretty flowers opened their blossoms. We were tempted to go for an outing.
It was Sunday, the 20th of April We set out very early on bikes, carrying bottles of champagne, beer and bags of cakes, bacon and cooked eggs. We rode along the winding paths in the fields, across the meadows and down the roads. The willow were fresh and green. The swallows were flying to and fro, up and down the sky. The birds, like musicians, snang their melodious songs in the trees, and the butterflies, like colorful dancers, were fluttering here and there. We breathed the fresh air deeply and laughed heartily.
At 10 am we arrived at the foot of the Shushan Hill. We left our bikes with a bike repairing shop and began to climb up the Hill. Near the top, under a big tree with luxuri ant foliage we had our picnic. We drank and ate, talked and laughed. After the picnic we stood in the breeze with our hands on our waists, enjoying the fine landscape. Then we lay on the grass talking about our life and studies.
At about 4 pm , we returned with balmy greenness on our backs and freshness in our hearts.
