东北虎因为起源于亚洲的北部，所以又被称为西伯利亚虎。在历史上，东北虎又是位老寿星，有三百万年的进化史。东北虎是大型捕食性猛兽，身长体重，强悍凶猛，与其它虎种相较，个体最大，体色最美，堪称百兽之王。
东北虎是典型的林栖动物，在我国长白山区，主要生活在针阔叶林和阔叶林中的山崖间和山坡多石砬子的地方，也常到灌木丛和高草中觅食。
东北虎爪子长达十厘米，比钢刀还锋利，犬齿长达六厘米，犹如尖刀利剑。东北虎体型庞大，平均体长为2。8米左右，尾长0。9~1米。虎身条纹常为赤褐色，背毛长44~45厘米，腹毛长55~65毫米；夏毛较深，较短。东北虎的.平均寿命约为20岁。
东北虎以捕猎动物为食，捕猎对象为狍子，鹿，野猪等有蹄动物；东北虎性极机警，走起路来和猫一样，毫无动静，行走能力很强，一昼夜能走八十至九十公里，跳跃高度达两米；东北虎还会游泳，但不会爬树。
在二十世纪初，我国长白山地区的东北虎有百头之多，但由于后来人类大面积砍伐森林，大量捕野生动物，处于食物链顶端的东北虎的食物被剥夺。此外，人类为取虎骨，虎皮而乱补滥的行为，目前，野生东北虎在中国的分布已退至松花江南岸，集中在中俄边境地带，数量仅为十只左右。
目前对东北虎的保护分两种方式，一种为栖息地保护，一种为异地保护。我国政府为保护东北虎建立了长白山自然综合保护区和黑龙江省七星砬子东北虎保护区，进行栖息地保护。而各个动物园，主要进行异地保护。
世界野生动物基金会已将东北虎列为全球十大濒危动物之首。

My favorite animal is the dog. Dogs are the most loyal animals to people.
