More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance， there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire， general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor， was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."
But Peter McGuire"s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire， a machinist， not Peter McGuire， founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire， later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson， N.J， proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

“叮咚，叮咚！”门铃响了。这么晚了，还会有谁呢？洁儿止住了哭泣，走到了门口。“吱呀”一声门开了，门外一片昏暗，没有人影，洁儿心中狐疑着。忽然，一张折叠着的纸片划着淡白色的弧线飘落在她的脚边。洁儿拾起纸片一看，原来是一封信。她打开信纸来瞧，只见纸上写着：嗨，你好！我是你的一个新朋友，看到你这么落魄，我心里十分难过，我就大方地把自己送给你吧！希望你能振作起来！回信请放在你家的邮箱上。你的朋友：自信。“自信！”洁儿情不自禁地叫出声来，多么熟悉的字眼呀，可是她仿佛失去它都快有一个世纪了。但是现在，一个朋友又把它送了回来。她激动不已，不假思索地将一封沾满泪痕的遗书揉成—团，抛出窗外。然后，拿出一张洁白的信纸提笔写道：“小信你好！谢谢你送来的‘自信’，我一定不会辜负你的期望，一定会振作起来，并且一定会获得成功。你的朋友：洁儿。”洁儿把回信放在自家的邮箱上，然后回到床上安然入睡。第二天起，她更加努力地学习；同时，她与小信之间的书信往来从此不断。
一年的时间飞快地过去了，转眼又到了高考的期间。一份耕耘、一份收获，洁儿终于成功地步入她理想的大学殿堂。“这次—定要和从未见过面的小信聚—聚，要与她分享自己的.快乐，要好好地感谢她的鼓励，要……”洁儿高兴地想着，于是她写了一封情深意长的邀请信。第二天一大早洁儿就去拿回信。当她打开信纸，熟悉的字迹印入眼帘：

恭喜你考上了大学，但不幸的是小信却无法看到并与你分享快乐了。小信是一个弃儿，由于她患有先天性心脏病，在襁褓中便被生母抛弃，我只是她的养母。小信也是一个善良、热心的好孩子，当她知道你的遭遇后，她便想到以写信的方式来鼓励你。在她与你通信后不久，一次心脏病的严重发作，夺去了她的生命。小信走之前，她再三地嘱咐我，一定要我坚持给你写信，并且不能把她的真相告诉你，直到你考上大学为止。洁儿，对不起！小信虽然永远地走了，但我坚信她还和我们在一起。
