一天，两只小鸟相遇了，其中一只小鸟撅着尾巴说：“小东西，你认识我吗？我的胆子可大了。”另一只小鸟冷冷地说：“我不认识你，不过我的胆子也挺大，你一定知道我，我有一个令人害怕的名字，叫虎雀。”“我叫牙签鸟，你一定听说过我，奥！我还有一个名字叫燕千鸟。”突然，它们异口同声地说：“既然都胆大，那就一起来比试比试。”
第二天，两只小鸟找来了乌鸦做裁判，牙签鸟带着大家来到大湖边，乌鸦问：“不是比胆大吗？来这儿干嘛？”牙签鸟笑了笑，飞向一只张着嘴的'鳄鱼，飞进了鳄鱼的嘴里，它在这里啄啄，又在那里啄啄，乌鸦吓得出了一身冷汗，可虎雀只是吐吐舌头说：“这有什么，我还在虎口中夺食呢！”
它们又来到一只正在吃一只兔子的老虎身边，虎雀飞进虎口中，老虎闭上了嘴巴，乌鸦大叫：“太残忍了！太残忍了！”可牙签鸟却打了一个哈欠说：“没什么，它这是自找的。”它俩刚准备离开，虎雀又挺着沾着的胸脯，打了一个饱嗝说：“吃得好饱，乌老哥，谁赢了？”“原来你们是这样比赛大胆呀。”乌鸦心想着，便进入了沉思。
过了一会儿，乌鸦一锤定音：“今天的冠军是——谁都不是！”“什么？！”牙签鸟和虎雀跳了起来，乌鸦问虎雀：“你敢到鳄鱼嘴中夺食吗？”它又问牙签鸟：“你敢到老虎口中夺食吗？”两只小鸟吓得魂飞魄散，一头向树下栽去。

内容提要：
从前有一个秀才，个性傲慢，目中无人，只要听说有人有特殊才能，就会去找那个人一较高下。有一天，他听说有位叫阿牛的人，胆量非常大，决定去找阿牛比赛，看看谁的胆子比较大。
阿牛听到秀才要和他比胆量，一头雾水的问：“胆量要怎么比呢？”秀才想了想，说：“我们就来比谁敢在三更半夜，一个人到城隍庙中，把包子放在塑像的嘴里好了！”原来乡野间绘声绘影的流传，每到半夜时分，城隍庙中的牛头马面、判官小鬼、泥塑人偶都会现出原形，开始审判初者的魂魄。阴森森的气氛，往往壤人不寒而栗，所以大家一到晚上都不敢靠近城隍庙。
大牛听了，对秀才说：“不如这样吧！你今天晚上去城隍庙塞包子，明天早上我去检查，如果十个包子都在，我就甘拜下风，承认你的胆子比我大。”秀才一口答应。
到了半夜，秀才一手拿着包子，一手拿着蜡烛来到了城隍庙。一阵寒风吹来，让他毛骨悚然，不由自主的跪在地上，胆颤心惊的说：“诸位神明，不要吓坏小人，我是真心诚意来献上供品的。”
没想到秀才走到第一个塑像前，正要放包子时，那个塑像突然“呼！”一声，吹熄了他的`蜡烛，还一口把包子咬走了！秀才惊慌失措的拔腿就跑，完全忘了要比赛胆量这回事了。
秀才回家后就病倒了，几天之后，阿牛去探望他，秀才奄奄一息的躺在床上，气若游丝的对阿牛说：“我不该邀你比胆量，我实在太胆大妄为，结果冒犯神明，快要一命归西了！”
阿牛听完，说：“你别在胡思乱想了，那天吹熄蜡烛的是我，我早你一步到城隍庙中，假扮成塑像在等你呢！”
秀才一听，解开心结，病也不药而愈了。从此以后，他再也不敢到处找人挑战了！
读后感想：
我觉得像秀才这种人真是要不得！每个人都有自己的特点，为什么要互相比较呢？所以每个人千万不要太高傲，否则就会有秀才这样的报应。

the radius of the earth is about 6,370 kilometres. it takes the earth 24 hours to rotate once. objects on the earths equator move with the earth at a speed of 460 metres per second, and the air close to the earths surface turns at the same speed. if the earth stopped rotating suddenly, the air would keep flowing eastward at a speed of 460 metres per second. the wind would be fourteen times as powerful as a hurricane. at the same time sea water would rush eastward at a speed of several hundred metres per second, which might do damages much greater than a seaquake would do. obviously, men could hardly stand such a catastrophe.
even if such a catastrophe would not happen, there would be a great temperature difference on the two hemispheres of the earth, and the four seasons of the year would no longer occur because a day and a night would be as long as a whole year instead of 24 hours. all this would greatly affect the life of human beings, imals and plants and that would cause worse results than anything imaginable.
