燕子的种类很多，有家燕、金腰燕、石燕、砂燕等，最常见的是家燕。家燕是一种候鸟，不但秋去春来，历年不炎，而且又多能返归故居，重入旧巢。据近代的研究，成鸟翌年返归旧巢率为47，1%，雏鸟翌年返归旧巢率为16%，有的竟能连续四年返回旧巢，正如《汉乐一府》中所说“翩翩堂前燕，冬藏夏来见”。所以每当燕子飞回来时，人们见到它们都有一种“似曾相识”的亲切感。
燕子(主要指家燕春来何处?秋去何方?据研究，燕子分布很广，在越冬时期，它们不仅遍及东南亚，并且远达澳洲北部，春来渐次北返，二月初达广东，三月初至福建，中旬达长江下游，四月初达黄河流域，再北就更迟。秋去一般始于八月终于十月。燕子飞行的速度很快(每秒98米，每次迁捉，体脂增多，体力健壮，常常数万成群，每日可行140公里(直线行进220公里：虽然如此，但仍旧是一种艰苦的行程，所以燕子在海上飞行时，多取岛屿连绵的路线，以便途中休息，在陆上飞行时，也多是在白天，飞行一程休息一阵：如飞渡浩渺的南太平洋海面，更加艰险，常常要忍饥受饿，甚至数日不得饮食，勉力渡过。而当年雏鸟由于体力不胜，80%在途中掉了。
燕子是亲近人们的鸟类，人们也很喜爱它，清脆的燕语，不停地在叫“吉骨，吉骨，住!吉骨，吉骨，住!……”仿佛在说：“不借你们的盐，不借你们的醋，只借你们的屋，给我们来住住。”我国民间还普遍存在着这样的思想，认为“燕子来巢，吉祥之兆”。当然燕子并不会预兆什么，但它确是捕捉害虫的健将，因此可以给人带来很大的好处。燕子一般每年育雏两次，育雏期间，亲鸟辛劳，终日不息，雏燕贪食，整天张口。真是“须臾十来往，扰恐巢中饥;辛勤三十日，母瘦雏渐肥。”(白居易诗。据观察，亲燕喂雏每小时达9到15次，每天约180次;平均每天捉虫约450只，加上亲燕自己捕食，总共不下五六百只，不难看出一对亲燕和它的两窝雏燕从四月到九月吃虫数字的惊人了。即以一只家燕而言，一个夏天就能吃掉50万到100万只昆虫——都是些蝇、蚊等害虫和牛蛇、蛇春象、楼姑等农业害虫。
我们必须大力保护燕子，不使其遭受伤害，不捣燕窝，不取燕卵，随时注意防止家猫等动物破坏燕巢捕食雏鸟。在燕子南迁以后，尤要尽力保护旧巢，以备缩短其来年修造窝巢的时间，这不仅直接有利于燕子两次繁殖育雏，更可间接促进农业的丰收。
